1,048 words; about a 5 minute read
Mission:
Investigate the Chintoka Shipyard Buildup
Location: Earth, France, Paris
Timeline: Current.
Kell shook her head. "Not as a direct, mass attack. If you can hold them down, I can definitely knock them out and keep them that way." She pauses, thinking. "How much time do we have? I could mix something so it's airborne that can be injected into the air supply to the room. I will make them drowsy before they go down, but they will be much more pliable at that point. Say, 20 minutes to work it up, get it to Scott to introduce into the A/C, then wait. Depending on the size of the room, and the species involved, they'll be woozy in 5, out in 7."
Jaal's eyes narrowed as he did some mental calculations. "So about half an hour," he nodded, "Then about ten to fifteen to copy everything we can and get out." He nodded again. "Not bad, we can do that and be gone before anyone knows what happened." A small, sly smile appeared on his face, "I like it. I like the way you people think. Lieutenant Asaa, make it work."
Kell abandons her window watch and goes off by a flat table, taking a few things out of her mini-backpack. Looking around she dug through some boxes, looking for containers.
Jaal touched the comm-bud in his ear, "Lieutenant Kayne, are you in a good spot to keep an eye on those people for thirty or so minutes and keep us apprised of what's going on up there?"
"I think I can manage that. Besides, I don't wanna find out whether these guys take prisoners or not." Kayne said, "I'll try to get a better look at what they're working on from where I'm at. Kayne out."
"We'll up be soon, hang in there," Jaal told him.
After a few minutes on her ad hoc project, Kell lined up the hypo and released her concoction into the bladder and pinched it off. She tied it twice, just to make sure it didn't leak before it was ready. Double-checking her work she nods at Jaal. "It's as ready as it'll ever be. Make sure he doesn't hang around that opening, just vent it into the duct, or pinch it off and drop it inside, then close off the access and watch for the effect.
"They may be a little disoriented as it kicks in, but that'll just offset any concern as they feel good about life in general. After ten minutes it'll be so dispersed it won't be affective anymore so anyone should be safe to enter."
Jaal nodded, "Sounds good. Let's go." He signaled to Kayne a warning about the air vents. To everyone else he said, "All right, get ready." To Karadis he said, "Chief, if you get a chance, question one if they aren't totally under when we get there. The rest of us will copy any data we can get our hands on to analyze back on the ship."
Isabelle readied herself to follow with the others once the air was clear.
Taking the lead, Karadis soundlessly made her way up the stairs to the third floor. Once there, she nodded to Scott as she passed him and carefully made her way forward, stopping at the same window he’d peered in through earlier
Lifting her head, she looked into the room. Two of the people inside were on the floor, out cold, one was slumped over a console, they too were out cold. The last person was kneeling by a machine of sorts, Karadis could only assume it was the time drive device.
Taking her chance, she crept forward, keeping an eye on those seemingly out cold, just in case they were faking it. Finally reaching the fourth person, she could see they were struggling to stand up.
She grabbed them by their collar, spun them round and punched them in the stomach. They folded like a shut pen knife, giving no resistance except to put their hands out so as not to get punched again.
“What’s this?” Karadis asked, pointing at the machine.
“Your worst nightmare” came the reply as the scientist banged their hand on the machine. Suddenly, there was a rushing, swirling sound, and the machine began starting up.
“What have you done?” Karadis shouted at the scientist, grabbing him by the throat.
“Sending you to hell” the scientist gasped, now losing consciousness. He slumped to the floor, like the others, now out cold. The sound the machine was making increased, and now a new sound joined in, like a rushing wind.
Kell shook her head, rushing with the rest, wondering what had gone wrong with her ad hoc remedy, hoping it wasn't actually the problem...
Rounding the hall and entering the room her focus was split between the unconscious bodies and the weird, keening wind...
"What the hell is that?" she shouted, trying to be heard. "Can we transport it into orbit? Or to the shuttle and fly it somewhere like a drone?!!" The pitch started to change, reminding her of some B-movie suspenseful music track.. but she wasn't quite enjoying much at the moment.
“One of the scientists hit the machine, I think he’s started it up” Karadis shouted back, trying to be heard over the sound the machine was making. “It’s to heavy by the looks of it to move, and we don’t have a way of transporting it out!”
At that point, someone else entered the room, “What the hell’s going on?” they shouted.
Karadis turned at the sound of the voice, then stared in disbelief, “CAPTAIN!”
Finchley looked back at her and repeated his question, “What the hell’s going on Karadis?”
“You can’t be here Sir, this things on build up to who knows what!” Karadis shouted.
“Well I am, so are the others from my team” Finchley yelled back, pointing to Kilbane and T’Lira. “We lost your signals and I was worried something had happened. We tracked them as far as this building, but then they stopped so we came to rescue you.”
"I suppose that would make sense, I din't even realize the building was shielded." Kayne said.
“Sir, you need to get out n…”, but she didn’t get any further, a blinding flash of light lit the room…
