Medical Conundrum.

Mission: The 'Eagle continues.
Location: Sickbay, USS Blackeagle
Timeline: Current.

Shon sat alone in the lounge looking out into the infinite galaxy. However she saw nothing of the beauty. Her mind was on Kara, the augmented woman she had killed and she had planned to perform her autopsy that afternoon but she had been reminded that she needed to review both Isabelle and Alec. Isabelle for her medical review and Alec to try to resolve the 'visions' he had been seeing. Shon sighed and left her salad and the view and walked back to Sickbay, glad that she had not met Karadis or Kilbane on the way.

Alec sat in Sickbay with Isabelle. He was so relieved she was alright. They were just waiting for Shon to run a few more tests to confirm Isabelle was indeed fine. Shon was also going to run some tests on his heightened senses and see what she could make of them.

Once Shon had reached her destination she stopped and put a smile on her face, there was certainly no point in letting her patients and friends see she was troubled. Taking a breath she walked in smiling. "Alec, Isabelle it it so good to see you both. Let's talk for a moment or two before I begin my investigations. she pulled up a chair to sit with them. "Either of you want a drink before we begin?" she asked.

Alec looked over to Shon, he was concerned for her. The whole Kara incident he was afraid had affected her more than she was letting on. "I'm good Shon." He answered, "How are you doing?"

Isabelle was certainly seeing the change in her friend, they’d known each other for a while and Isabelle could see the difference. “It’s affected you hasn’t it? Kara’s death?”

"My friend's it is the pair of you that I am concerned with," she looked at Isabelle. "However when I killed her I broke the most sacred rule of the physician and I must be judged on that....Now, how are you both feeling? Alec are you still having the flashes?"

"And we're concerned about you Shon, you are a damn fine doctor and don't you forget it. As for me all my senses seem heightened. Isabelle has an aura; she appears to be glowing."

"hmm" Shon said and brought out her trusty medical scanner. "this is tuned to your specific brain waves Alec. I want you to look away from Isabelle and i will tell you when you can look back at her? just do no harm."

"Okay Shon." Alec answered easily then looked at her, "Of course I won't do any harm Shon."

Shon quickly looked at him? "What did you say?"

"I was just repeating what you said to me, just do no harm." Alec replied as he looked away from Isabelle.

Shon shook her head and laughed. "No I did not, now look at me and tell me if you can still see the aura?" Shon held her scanner towards him.

Alec sighed, "Shon, you did too." He insisted but didn't press the issue. Instead, he did as she asked and looked at Shon. "No," He replied simply. "Not when I look at you."

Shon smiled, "Now look at Isabelle please? and tell me what you see?"

Alec did what Shon asked. Turning to look at Isabelle, smiling as he did, he saw her aura; it was glowing around her in a soft golden yellow. "She has an aura about her." He answered.

“The reticular part of your brain has activated and your isoboromine and cation levels are increasing. Alec your brain is beginning to form new pathways.” She exclaimed, can you see anything else, sense anything, hear anything?”

Alec didn't rush an answer as he concentrated on the things around him. "I can hear the two nurses at the nurses station. One is telling the other about her date. My eyesight is much sharper, and it was 20-15 before." He paused I can smell a nurse's perfume from one of the exam rooms. He looked at Shon, "I'm guessing my taste would be heightened as well as my touch as I can feel slight indentions and scratches on this bed."

Shon nodded, "If you were a human female I would say you have something called hyperosmia, which, would describe the symptoms you are telling me. You do, however have greater hypocamal grey matter that your last brain scan. I can find no nanites or augmentations in your body. so, what the hell is going on? Sorry, that was a question for me. Isabelle are you sensing anything different in Alec?”

Isabelle gave Alec a curious look. “He’s more…pronounced to me, if that makes sense? His presence is stronger than it was before almost like it would be if he was a telepath.”

"Alec jump up on the scanner bed please this will not do no harm take long. I want to search for any abnormalities however small. Remind me when this all began?" Shon turned and jumped back. "Kara, what! how?" she reached out to touch her, "Noo" Shon whispered as the vision disappeared. Slightly confused she turned back..."I erm excuse me a minute." she walked off into her office and leaned against the wall breathing heavily. "Do no harm, do no harm." Shon's eyes closed as she fought to bring her Vulcan side in to control her feelings and returned to Alec and Isabelle.

Isabelle frowned as she watched Shon go, the phrase she kept repeating was worrying. She was concerned that Shon was heading for a mental breakdown.

Getting onto the bio bed, Alec laid back. " It began on the bridge where I slammed my head into a console after exiting that slipstream drive we encountered."

"Hmmm looking at my notes from then there was no sign of any real head trauma just a slight concussion, Alec can you read what anyone is thinking, even a little?"

Alec concentrated, his brow furrowing with the effort to big up either Isabelle's or Shon's thoughts. After several seconds, "I can pick up your thoughts of you saying do no harm and Isabelle is concerned about you and me."

Isabelle nodded. “That’s right, that’s what I was thinking and feeling.

Shon began her deep brain scan looking at the frontal, parietal, temporal and occipital lobes of his brain. "I wonder" she said to herself once again. "there is a fifth lobe of the brain called the insula, it is well hidden but maybe..Alec I would like to image that area of your brain, this will involve you going to sleep for about an hour whilst the deep scan is performed, if you agree?"

"Sure Shon, I trust you." He looked at Isabelle, "Will you be here when I wake up?"

“Damn right I will” Isabelle nodded. “I’m not going to leave you.”

Alec smiled broadly; everything was right with the universe. "Wonderful, simply wonderful" He said softly to Isabelle as he laid back and waited for Shon to begin the deep scan of his brain.

Shon administered the sedation and Alec drifted off to sleep. Performing the deep scan related to the Cerebellum which seemed enlarged. Alec's spinal cord was also hyper stimulated. Shon sighed and smiled at Isabelle. "this will take a few minutes. Isabelle, Finchley has asked that I seek your advice about .....he says a possible breakdown. I am aware, however you are also recovering both mentally and physically. When you are feeling better I need to schedule it. However I do expect to answer for killing Kara."

“I’m recovered enough to talk Shon, thanks to you” Isabelle offered a smile. “I understand what you did and why you did it, you saw a way to save me and you took it. If Kara’s death is anyone’s fault it’s mine.”

A small alarm sounded and she turned back to Alec. "Ahh, It is definitely his cerebellum, no signs of infection, no nanites, no augmetations. I could try injecting his brain stem with cilloprine and Goldamine to lessen the swelling, but sometimes there can be side effects. Okay, time to wake him and offer him the options." Depressing her hypo to his neck they waited for him to wake.

Alec slowly stirred and came awake blinking up at Shon and smiling dreamily at Isabelle. "Hi." He said to them both.

"Welcome back Alec," Shon said warmly. the part of your brain which helps control smell, vision and hearing, the cerebellum is showing hyperstimulation. I cannot find a reason for this. No sign of infection, nanite or augment invasion. I feel it may be related to this planet however as you began to see an aura as we neared the place. It may disappear as we put some distance between us and the planet or I could injecting you brain stem to reduce the swelling. However there are side effects of increased dreaming, depression and sometimes visual disturbances. These can be controlled by medication.....my medical expertise would suggest, unless it really worries you wait to see if it responds to distance and then we can review it? Do no harm.

Isabelle offered her opinion “Maybe you should wait? Right now you’re not in any danger.”

Alec turned his head to look at Isabelle. "I agree Isabelle." He then looked at Shon, "I think I am going to wait and see how this plays out Shon as I am in no danger, I think that is the best option."

Then I will discharge the pair of you into each others care. Alec I had to notify the Commodore about your condition and he has asked me to pay close attention to you. I want you to make a record of everything you experience and see me every day. Isabelle I do need to speak to you in much more depth, I do not feel right, my Vulcan side is holding me together and sooner or later I might 'let go' in some way, I don't know how.

Alec groaned and shook his head, "You told the captain? Oh, Shon, couldn't you have told him I was fine? I could still come see you and made a record. Now he'll think, I'm one step away from going off the deep end." His voice full of weary frustration.

“I think we could all do with a rest right now” Isabelle offered a smile. “As ships Counsellor I want you to get some rest Shon, we’ll speak in the morning unless you feel you need to talk earlier. If you do just call me. As for you Alec, let’s go home.”

“No he doesn’t Alec, he has himself to worry about. Now, go the two of you, spend some time together you deserve it. Go on!” She shooed them out of her sick bay.
